How to Build a Local Movement

The fight against anti-democratic forces is strongest when rooted in local, connected, and resilient movements. We've heard from many people looking to organize movements in their local areas. This toolkit is designed for anyone wanting to start a local anti-fascist protest movement, drawing from the lessons we've learned. It provides practical steps to build momentum, engage the community, and organize effective actions.

1. Generating Momentum

Getting people to show up is the hardest part, but the right platforms make all the difference.

  • Use Reddit to boost turnout - Due to Meta’s increasingly concerning political affiliations and content restrictions, many are turning to Reddit. It has become an essential tool for organizing, but finding the right subreddits takes effort. Look beyond local city subs and explore activism, politics, and general interest communities.

  • Engage all social media platforms. Despite corporate ownership, these platforms are where people are. Instagram, Facebook, Twitter (X), and TikTok all serve different roles in getting the message out.

  • Create a website. A website serves as an anchor for your movement, housing event details, calls to action, and ways to get involved.

  • Distribute digital and paper posters/fliers. QR codes and website links help bridge the gap between online engagement and local organizing, ensuring your message spreads across both digital and physical spaces.

2. Effective Communication & Security

Protests and movements need secure and reliable ways to coordinate.

  • Use encrypted messaging apps. Avoid WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger—not only to limit reliance on Meta but also for security concerns. Safer alternatives like Signal and Discord offer better privacy and control.

  • Prioritize anonymity. Online platforms are being monitored, and movements are being tracked. Encourage members to use aliases, VPNs, and secure communication tools.

  • Build a press list. Identify local journalists, independent media outlets, and national news sources that may cover your movement. Sending timely press releases ensures broader awareness.

  • Use consistent hashtags. Identify your city (e.g. #Vancouver) and your organization (e.g. #VancouverAgainstFascism). Other hashtags widely used in this movement are #resist #buildtheresistance #dumptrump #trump #antifascism and others we may be missing.

3. Building Local Community

A strong local base is essential for sustained action.

  • Start small and meet in person. Build support with informal meetups, flyering, or community discussions.

  • Make engagement ongoing. Protests are important, but long-term success depends on sustained organizing, follow-ups, and relationship-building.

  • Provide an online community forum. Ensure there is space in your group’s communication platform for a community forum.

  • Keep engagement respectful. Post community guidelines to ensure discussions remain constructive and inclusive.

  • Hold in-person town halls. Face-to-face meetings are essential for building and sustaining a tight-knit community. Town halls provide a space for open discussion, collective organizing, and real connection—something that sets us apart from right-wing, online-only conspiracy movements.

4. Emphasize Peaceful & Effective Protest

Protests should be peaceful, well-organized, and safe to maximize impact and ensure continued public support.

  • Commit to non-violence. Peaceful protests maintain credibility, attract broader support, and reduce the risk of being shut down.

  • Notify local police. While law enforcement is often met with skepticism, giving them advance notice can help prevent unnecessary escalation. Having a direct contact (if possible) can improve coordination.

  • Plan logistics carefully. Secure a location, map out routes, and establish clear rallying points. Ensure accessibility and consider transit, parking, and rest areas.

  • Stay on message. Keep the focus clear—don’t let unrelated narratives hijack the movement. (For example, Tesla Takedown should remain about corporate overreach, not turn into an anti-EV rally.)

  • Bring energy and music. Live performances, drums, or even a small marching band can help sustain momentum and engagement.

  • Designate a speaker. A rally leader should help focus the crowd, deliver key messages, and keep the protest unified in purpose.

Keeping protests peaceful, focused, and engaging strengthens the movement and builds long-term momentum.oints.

5. Expanding National and Cross-Border Solidarity

Local antifascist fights are part of a larger movement, and collaboration strengthens the cause.

  • Connect with other groups. At the community, provincial, and national levels, similar organizations are fighting the same battle.

  • Coordinate with larger movements. Groups like True North HQ and 50501 We The People are working to build cross-border resistance. If your movement aligns with principles of democracy, human rights, and anti-authoritarianism, reach out and collaborate.

This is just the beginning. Building a movement takes time, but with the right tools and coordination, local protests can grow into sustained action. If you are organizing and want to connect, let us know.
